Indian telecom giant Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. has called for legal action against competitor Bharti Airtel Ltd., alleging a violation of conditions to offer services on the latest Apple Inc. smartwatch, The Economic Times of India reported.
Reliance Jio, controlled by businessman Mukesh Ambani, reportedly wrote to the Indian Telecommunications Department, alleging that Bharti Airtel used overseas nodes to offer services on the Apple Watch Series 3. Jio claims this could breach national security.
The allegation qualifies for a maximum penalty of 500 million Indian rupees per telecom circle.
Bharti Airtel officials, who did not want to be named, have denied the accusations. They said information on customers and network nodes, among other things, is hosted securely by Airtel India, with provisions for lawful interception.
As of May 11, 2018, US$1 was equivalent to 67.45 Indian rupees.
