Of the S&P 500 constituents at Aug. 31, 324 companies had a positive return. Advanced Micro Devices Inc., a semiconductor company, outperformed S&P 500 constituents with a 37.3% return in August.
Nektar Therapeutics, a pharmaceuticals company, and Nordstrom Inc., a consumer discretionary company, posted the second- and third-highest returns for the month at 26.4% and 20.6%, respectively.
Meanwhile, Hanesbrands Inc., a consumer company, was the worst performer in the S&P 500 stocks, losing 20.6% in August. It was followed by Noble Energy Inc. and DENTSPLY International Inc., which lost 17.4% and 17%, respectively.
