Nestlé's Nespresso to invest in Zimbabwean coffee industry

Nestlé SA's espresso brand Nespresso said Sept. 6 that it will provide training and technical assistance to Zimbabwean coffee farmers in a bid to revive the southern African nation's coffee industry.

The company's long-term investment plan includes training for climate-smart, sustainable farming. According to Nespresso, Zimbabwean coffee production has been in sharp decline for 18 years due to a series of economic shocks that have affected the country's agriculture industry.

The program, in partnership with international nonprofit group TechnoServe, is expected to benefit 400 smallholder coffee farmers over the next five years.

The Swiss food group said Nespresso will buy more than 95% of Zimbabwean smallholders' high quality harvest this season. The produce will be made available to consumers globally in 2019.
