JD.com Inc. said May 21 that its augmented reality, Beauty Mirror, will be featured in brick-and-mortar stores of retail giant Walmart Inc. and Chinese cosmetics brand Carslan, as the Chinese e-commerce giant expands its AR technology from online to offline use.
Using the Beauty Mirror, shoppers will be able to virtually try on products such as lipsticks and blushes, eliminating hygiene and availability issues related to in-store makeup testers, JD said.
This follows the company's March launch of its AR Styling Station, which allows users to virtually test makeup products online using the JD mobile app. The online retailer said it implemented the Styling Station with more than 60 brands on its platform.
Other AR services offered by JD include a try-on feature for eyeglasses and a 3D fitting room for apparel. The company has also collaborated with brands including L'Oréal SA, Maybelline, Max Factor, Budweiser, Tsingtao Brewery Co. Ltd.'s Tsingtao Beer and Treasury Wine Estates Ltd. to use interactive AR features such as games for marketing purposes.
In addition, JD said it is working with affiliate apparel e-commerce platform Vipshop Holdings Ltd. to apply advanced AR technologies in online fashion, and is also teaming up with Chinese tech company Lenovo Group Ltd. to explore AR and mixed-reality shopping scenarios.
