Canada's industrial capacity utilization rate rises for 7th straight quarter

Canada's industrial capacity utilization rate grew for the seventh straight quarter in the first three months of 2018, driven by gains in the construction sector, Statistics Canada said.

Canadian industries operated at 86.1% of their production capacity in the first quarter, up from an 85.6% efficiency level in the previous quarter. The sequence of gains through the first quarter is the longest since the third quarter of 2009 to the first quarter of 2011, according to the agency.

The capacity utilization rate in the construction industry rose to 92.4% for the quarter from 90.8%, the seventh consecutive quarterly increase. In the forestry and logging industry, the capacity utilization rate declined to 85.6% from 87.0%

The manufacturing sector showed a capacity utilization rate of 86.1%, up 0.4 percentage point. The figure represents the seventh consecutive quarterly increase and the highest level since the fourth quarter of 2000. The gain was again driven by the durable goods manufacturing industries.
