Norwegian seafood company Mowi ASA will start offering fresh salmon to consumers in mainland China through JD.com Inc., according to a May 31 announcement.
Mowi's Chinese arm has teamed up with the Chinese online retailer to roll out four new salmon offerings during JD.com's June 18 anniversary sales festival period.
The fish producer is expected to capitalize on the growing demand for salmon in China. JD.com said salmon sales on its platform in 2018 doubled year over year, with "salmon" as the top search term in the retailer's fish category.
Mowi China will supply salmon products through its newly established factory in Shanghai, the company's first in mainland China.
Additionally, Mowi China will introduce frozen salmon cubes aimed at families with young children, as well as premium fresh salmon portions farmed and delivered from Mowi's overseas farming operations in Norway, Scotland, Chile, Faroe Islands and Canada. The imported salmon will arrive in China within 72 hours after it is harvested, according to the release.
