Unilever vows to cut down plastic packaging, waste by 2025

The Unilever Group on Oct. 7 pledged to halve its use of virgin plastic by 2025 and help collect and process more plastic packaging than it sells.

The Anglo-Dutch consumer goods giant said it plans to reach the goal through investments and partnerships in waste collection and processing, as well as buying and using recycled plastics in its packaging.

The company said its plastic packaging footprint today is around 700,000 tonnes annually, and it aims to lower this to no more than 350,000 tonnes by 2025.

"Our plastic is our responsibility and so we are committed to collecting back more than we sell, as part of our drive towards a circular economy," Unilever CEO Alan Jope said in a statement. "This is a daunting but exciting task which will help drive global demand for recycled plastic."

Unilever said it will also help collect and process around 600,000 tonnes of plastic annually by 2025 through the waste management partnerships it plans to forge.

In October 2018, Unilever signed a global initiative to eliminate plastic waste and switch to sustainable packaging by 2025. Other signatories in the program include Nestlé SA, PepsiCo Inc. and Walmart Inc.
