Vistra's battery storage project in Texas starts operation

Vistra Energy Corp. subsidiary Luminant Generation Co. LLC said Jan. 3 that it finished construction and started operation of a battery storage project adjacent to its 180-MW Upton 2 photovoltaic solar farm in West Texas.

The 10-MW/42-MWh lithium-ion energy storage system that began operating Dec. 31, 2018, stores excess power produced by the solar facility during the day and releases it when energy demand is at its highest in the late afternoon and early evening.

In October 2018, Luminant secured a $1 million grant from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for the battery storage project.
