The U.S. Department of Justice may let Walt Disney Co. spin off 21st Century Fox Inc.'s 22 regional sports networks instead of selling them to win regulatory approval for its Fox deal, the New York Post reported Jan. 14, citing sources with knowledge of the matter.

Disney could relinquish the control of the RSNs or "spin it out to a separate board with a partial public company," one source said.

New Fox, the company to be spun off in connection with 21st Century Fox's merger with Disney, does not intend to bid for any of the RSNs that Disney may sell to win the DOJ's approval for the 21st Century Fox entertainment assets.

Disney is required to sell the RSNs within 90 days of the Fox deal closing, which is expected to happen in February or March.
