Report: Charter planning to build wireless network

Charter Communications Inc. is "widely expected" to begin constructing a wireless network in certain locations that are part of its cable footprint in an effort to expand its influence in the mobile industry, according to a Sept. 13 report from Light Reading.

Charter is planning to build 4G LTE coverage areas using spectrum from the 3.5 GHz band in locations with a high volume of customers in its wireless offering, known as Spectrum Mobile, the report said, citing sources outside the company who claim to be familiar with the plans.

Charter launched Spectrum Mobile across all Charter markets in September 2018. The service leverages the cable company's network of Wi-Fi hotspots and a mobile virtual network operator agreement with Verizon Communications Inc. As such, any mobile usage that occurs off the Wi-Fi network leads to payments to Verizon.

Under a new wireless network, Charter will reportedly use electronic SIM technology to "push customers' mobile traffic from Verizon's LTE network and onto Charter-owned cell towers, where they're available, in order to reduce the amount of money Charter pays to Verizon for wholesale access to Verizon's LTE network."

Charter will also attempt to utilize its wireless effort to expand internet sales to customers and businesses, by using fixed wireless technology "on the outskirts of its wired network footprint in order to reach additional customers with its Internet offerings," according to the report.

Representatives from Charter were not able to be immediately reached for comment.
