South Africa drops plan to deregister mining union after leadership pledges

South Africa's Department of Employment and Labour said Sept. 2 that it would no longer seek to deregister the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union, the largest union in the platinum sector, after having accused the union earlier of violating its own constitution.

Labor Relations Registrar Lehlohonolo Molefe said the shift in his stance was based on a number of written representations by the union's leadership following talks, including a pledge to hold a leadership conference, scheduled for Sept. 18-20, something the union has not done since 2013.

It emerged in April that the mineworkers' union, which came to prominence during a wage strike at Lonmin PLC, was in danger of losing its registration. At the time the union said the move was politically motivated and raised its concerns with Molefe about the "unusual attention" it was receiving while denying the charges.

The union is involved in wage talks with platinum producers including Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd., Sibanye Gold Ltd. and Anglo American Platinum Ltd., having rejected initial wage offers. It ended a five-month strike at Sibanye in April. The union did not respond to a request for comment.
