Walmart raises age restriction for buying guns

Walmart Inc. will raise the age restriction for gun purchases to 21 years of age as it conducts a review of its firearms sales policy, according to a Feb. 28 announcement.

The U.S. retail giant said it will also remove items resembling assault-style rifles, such as nonlethal airsoft guns and toys, on its website. It will also require customers to pass a background check before purchasing any firearm, even though the law allows the sale of guns if no response to a background check has been received within three days.

"Our policy prohibits the sale until an approval is given," the company said.

The move follows specialty retailer Dick's Sporting Goods Inc.'s announcement the same day that it will no longer sell assault-style rifles in its stores, and that it will stop selling firearms to customers under 21 years old.

Walmart ended the sale of modern sporting rifles in 2015, including the AR-15, and handguns, except in Alaska.
