Insurance moves through Dec. 21

S&P Global Market Intelligence presents a weekly rundown of selected executive management and other personnel moves in the insurance industry. The changes are listed by announcement date in reverse chronological order.

Dec. 21

Kenneth Stecher, director and executive chairman of Cincinnati Financial Corp.'s board, informed the company that he will retire from active employment effective Jan. 31, 2017. He will continue as a director and nonexecutive chairman of the company's board.

Charles Stoneburner II, senior vice president of Cincinnati Insurance Co., told the company that the effective date of his retirement will be Jan. 6, 2017.


Athene Holding Ltd. said Guy Smith III, president of Athene USA, is stepping down from his role, effective Jan. 1, 2017.


Gregory Ostergren, American National Insurance Co. executive vice president of multiple line and chief corporate risk officer, is no longer with the company, effective Dec. 19, the company said in a Dec. 21 filing.

Dec. 20

Manulife Financial Corp. appointed James Gallagher executive vice president and general counsel of the company, effective Dec. 20.


Rob Kuchinski, senior vice president and head of international property at Allied World Assurance Co. Holdings AG, resigned, The Insurance Insider reported.

Kuchinski is said to be joining Zurich, according to the report.

Dec. 19

Barton Hedges will step down as CEO of Greenlight Capital Re Ltd., effective March 31, 2017. Hedges will also leave the board.

Leonard Goldberg, the company's former CEO and current board member, will become interim CEO.


James River Group Holdings Ltd. appointed Sarah Doran CFO of the group's holding companies, effective Jan. 16, 2017.


HealthPartners Inc. named Nico Pronk president of HealthPartners Institute, effective Jan. 23, 2017.


QBE North America, an operating division of QBE Insurance Group Ltd., has named Kris Hill CFO, effective Jan. 17, 2017.

Dec. 15

Enstar Group Ltd. co-founder and co-COO Nick Packer was named CEO of KaylaRe Ltd., a new Bermuda-based class 4 reinsurer started by Enstar. Hillhouse Capital Management Ltd. and Stone Point Capital LLC provided some of the initial capital for KaylaRe.

Enstar also announced several management changes with the launch of KaylaRe, effective immediately.

Co-founder Paul O'Shea was named president of Enstar and executive chairman of StarStone, an Enstar unit.

Orla Gregory was named Enstar's COO. Paul Brockman and David Atkins will take on more responsibility for Enstar's core insurance and legacy activity, including oversight of claims, commutations and ceded reinsurance.

Demian Smith was named group CEO of StarStone. David Message was named StarStone's chief underwriting officer.


HCI Group, Inc. appointed Mark Harmsworth senior vice president of finance.

Harmsworth was president of JMH Consultancy Group, where he served as consulting chief strategy officer for Stewart Information Services Corp.


Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Tennessee created a new chief government relations officer position to oversee the insurer's relationships with regulators and legislators, as well as its policy advocacy efforts.

Dakasha Winton, who was director of state government relations and associate general counsel for BCBS of Tennessee, was promoted to the role. Calvin Anderson, who previously oversaw the new position's responsibilities, will retire in January 2017.


Jeffrey Cook was appointed CEO of Aetna Inc.'s joint venture with Texas Health Resources.

Cook was at Ascension Health as national vice president, insurance and value-based strategy and reimbursement, and concurrently served as president and CEO of Seton Insurance Services, Seton Health Alliance and Seton Health Plan Inc.
