Nuclear update: Output bumps up slightly with returning units

Total U.S. nuclear plant availability ramped slightly higher early Aug. 14, reaching 99.60%, up from 97.03% on Aug. 11 and above the 97.25% reported on the same day in 2016.

Giving a small push to total output was the restart of two units. Dominion Energy Inc.'s Surry 1 reactor in Virginia was returned to 100% as of early Aug. 14, up from 1% on Aug. 11. The reactor was taken offline late Aug. 9 due to a reactor coolant system leakage.

Also, Vistra Energy Corp.'s Comanche Peak 2 in Texas was operating at 98% as of early Aug. 14, up from 2% on Aug. 11. The reactor was shut June 6 for undisclosed reasons.

In addition, Exelon Corp.'s Quad Cities 2 reactor in Illinois was eyed at 70% early Aug. 14. The unit had been offline for about a week.
