Only 1 stock in S&P 500 Financials Index ended December in the green

December's market sell-off battered U.S. financial stocks harder than most.

The S&P 500 Financials Index lost 11.3% last month, compared to a 9.0% drop for the S&P 500 as a whole. The Hartford Financial Services Group Inc. was the only company out of 67 in the financials index to end December 2018 in positive territory, with a 0.6% return.

Meanwhile, SVB Financial Group was the worst performer of the S&P 500 Financial Index, losing 25.5% in December 2018, followed by Brighthouse Financial Inc.'s 24.3% decline and a 20.5% drop for Jefferies Financial Group Inc.
