Saudi Telecom secures soccer rights for 6.6B riyals

Saudi Telecom Co. has acquired the rights to broadcast domestic and Saudi Arabian national team soccer matches from the General Sport Authority and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation for 6.6 billion Saudi Arabian riyals.

The 10-year agreement will allow the state-controlled operator to air the matches online, according to a Feb. 6 news release. Saudi Telecom can also either launch a TV station or sell the rights to other stations for the provision of television broadcasting.

The General Sport Authority said Feb. 5 that the exclusive rights will include the transmission of local competitions, as well as matches from the Saudi Professional League, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Cup and the Crown Prince Cup.

The company will also receive marketing sponsorship for General Sport Authority competitions, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, the Saudi Professional League, the referees committee and technical support for championships.

As of Feb. 6, US$1 was equivalent to 3.75 Saudi Arabian riyals.
