Enel Green Power begins work on 133-MW solar expansion project in Brazil

Enel Green Power Brasil Participações Ltda. started construction of a 133-MW expansion project for the São Gonçalo solar facility in Brazil.

The expansion will raise the total capacity of São Gonçalo to 608 MW, according to an Aug. 21 company news release.

"We are further expanding São Gonçalo, South America's largest solar plant currently under construction, reinforcing our commitment to boost our renewable capacity in Brazil, where we are the main player in both solar and wind in terms of installed capacity and project portfolio," said Antonio Cammisecra, head of Enel Green Power, Enel SpA's global business line dedicated to renewables.

The expansion project's construction will cost about €100 million.

The São Gonçalo solar plant is being built in São Gonçalo do Gurguéia in Brazil's northeastern state of Piauí. It is expected to be fully operational by 2020.

The project's first 475-MW section started construction in October 2018.

Of the total installed capacity at São Gonçalo, 343 MW is supported by power supply contracts with corporate customers in the Brazilian free energy market, while 265 MW from the first section of the project is supported by 20-year power supply contracts with distribution companies operating in the country's regulated market.
