Gerald Metals to suspend Marampa iron ore mine in Sierra Leone

Gerald Metals LLC will halt its Marampa iron ore operation in Sierra Leone due to a dispute with the government over royalty payments, Reuters reported Sept. 20, citing a company letter.

Nearly 1,000 workers will be affected by the move, the report said. The government, which launched a crackdown on miners, accused Gerald Metals of failing to follow the mine's agreed work schedule and pay royalties. The company denied the claims.

According to the newswire, Gerald Metals unit SL Mining already filed an arbitration case against Sierra Leone after a ban was imposed in July on exports from the mine.

A Gerald Metals spokeswoman declined Reuters' request for comment on the letter, but slammed the government's unwillingness to resolve the issue.
