India drops cap on foreign ownership in commercial coal sector

The Indian government relaxed foreign direct investment rules on four sectors, including commercial coal mining, in which 100% foreign ownership is now allowed, Reuters reported Aug. 28.

Ending the cap on foreign investment in this sector is aimed at tackling fuel shortages and reviving economic growth in India, which dropped to 5.8% in the March quarter, its slowest rate in five years.
