Volkswagen takes minority stake in tech firm SeeReal

Volkswagen AG said Aug. 30 that it has taken a minority stake in Luxembourg-based technology firm SeeReal Technologies SA to collaborate on "future-oriented" display technologies for cars.

The German carmaker said it is investing in SeeReal, which specializes in the development of augmented reality and holographic technologies, to incorporate these solutions into its future vehicles.

"Augmented reality will be a key component in future mobility and interaction concepts," Axel Heinrich, head of innovation at Volkswagen, said in a statement. "We will be providing the automotive requirements for this exciting project and the know-how in [three-dimensional] technology will be contributed by SeeReal."

Research cooperation between the companies already began at the end of 2018, according to the release.

Volkswagen is expecting the collaboration to help the company develop three-dimensional, touchable head-up displays that can project information into the driver's field of vision, with direct links to the driver's environment. The automaker said its fully electric ID.3, which will be sold in 2020, will be equipped with this kind of head-up display.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
