REIT short interest rises in January 1st half

Average short interest among U.S. equity REITs increased 6 basis points to 3.21% of outstanding shares during the first half of January.

Diversified REIT Gramercy Property Trust Inc. posted the greatest rise in short interest relative to shares outstanding among SNL-covered equity REITs between Dec. 30, 2016, and Jan. 13. The percentage of the company's shares held short relative to shares outstanding climbed 217 basis points to 6.18% as of Jan. 13.

Specialty REIT DuPont Fabros Technology Inc. had the steepest drop in short interest relative to shares outstanding among SNL-covered equity REITs between Dec. 30 and Jan. 13. The percentage of the company's shares held short relative to shares outstanding declined 150 basis points to 7.37% as of Jan. 13.

Seritage Growth Properties topped the list of most shorted REITs during the period. The shopping center REIT saw short interest rise 145 basis points to 26.83% of shares outstanding.
