Ford Motor Co. doubled down on its commitment to electrified vehicles at the Frankfurt Motor Show, aiming to sell 1 million electrified vehicles by 2022.
The Dearborn, Mich.-base carmaker said Sept. 10 that in three years, it expects sales of its electrified lineup to account for more than half of the company's passenger vehicle sales, surpassing its conventional petrol and diesel powertrains.
Ford expects to launch 17 electrified vehicles in Europe by 2024, with eight to roll out in 2019.
The U.S. carmaker made the announcement at the automotive show in Germany, where it unveiled four of the upcoming electrified offerings. They include the Kuga Plug-In Hybrid SUV, the Explorer PHEV seven-seat SUV, the Tourneo Custom PHEV eight-seater, the Puma EcoBoost Hybrid SUV-inspired crossover and the Ford Mondeo Hybrid wagon.
Ford added that its new Mustang-inspired all-electric performance SUV will arrive in 2020. The company plans to offer electrified options on every Ford model over the next five years.
"Our future is rooted in electrification. We are electrifying across our portfolio, providing all of our customers with more accessible vehicle options that are fun to drive, have improved fuel economy and are better for our environment," Stuart Rowley, president of Ford in Europe, said in June.
At the Frankfurt event, Ford also unveiled its new smartphone and tablet app that will allow plug-in hybrid vehicle owners and operators to easily locate, navigate to and pay for charging. Ford has more than 118,000 charging points across 30 countries, according to the release.
In July, Ford partnered with energy company Centrica PLC to offer home charging installation services for Ford customers in the U.K. and Ireland.
Ford's stock closed down 1.26% to $9.42 on Sept. 10 in New York.
