US weekly coal production drops 4.8% YOY

Total U.S. coal production for the week ended Aug. 31 declined 4.8% year over year to 14.8 million tons from 15.6 million tons, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

For the 52 weeks ended Aug. 31, production was 727.7 million tons, a year-over-year decline of 3.7%, while year-to-date coal output dropped 5.3% year over year to 474.4 million tons.

The western region's coal production for the week reached 8.2 million tons, a 7.7% decrease from the prior year's 8.9 million tons. Data for the western region covers Powder River Basin mines.

Coal production from Appalachian mines totaled 3.9 million tons, roughly flat from the previous year period.

The interior region's production amounted to 2.7 million tons, a 1.5% decline from 2.8 million tons a year prior. Interior region data covers mines in the Illinois Basin.

The EIA's production data is derived from rail carload estimates.
