Japanese internet service provider Rakuten Inc. announced June 1 that it has inked an agreement with food retailer Lawson Inc. to roll out its smartphone app payment service Rakuten Pay in Lawson stores.
Under the agreement, customers will be able to pay using the mobile payment service at Lawson stores nationwide starting August.
Rakuten and Lawson have previously collaborated on a variety of services, such as the launch of Rakuten's electronic money service Rakuten Edy to all Lawson stores in August 2007, as well as the introduction of a convenience store pick-up service in 2016 where customers of Rakuten Ichiba and Rakuten Books can pick up their products at Lawson stores throughout the country.
