Liberty House may make play for Rio Tinto's Dunkerque aluminum smelter

Liberty House is mulling a bid for Rio Tinto's Dunkerque smelter as the company looks to off-load its aluminum assets in France, Reuters reported Dec. 13, citing "three sources with direct knowledge of the matter."

The U.K.-based GFG Alliance, which comprises Gupta's Liberty House Group and SIMEC, was previously reported to be looking to expand its aluminum business.

The smelter is estimated to be valued at about €200 million, and has an annual production capacity of 270,000 tonnes.

According to the report, both Rio Tinto and Liberty House declined to comment on the potential deal.

The diversified miner is also looking to sell its Iceland-based Reykjavik aluminum smelter and is renewing efforts to off-load its Pacific Aluminium Pty Ltd. assets in Australia and New Zealand.
