Swedish FSA official to become Handelsbanken's chief compliance officer

Svenska Handelsbanken AB (publ) named Martin Noréus, deputy director general of the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority, to be its chief compliance officer.

The appointment will take effect no later than March 2020.

This move comes as the Nordic region faces scrutiny over compliance with anti-financial crime measures following a string of money laundering scandals in some of the biggest lenders in the region. Six of its biggest banks recently formed a joint venture company to develop a platform for handling know-your-customer data as part of efforts to combat financial crime.

Stockholm-based Handelsbanken reported a year-over-year decline in its profit in the second quarter, driven by higher spending on anti-money laundering measures.

Additionally, the bank hired Jan Larsson from Yrkesakademin AB to be its chief communications officer. Larsson will also be part of the executive management.
