Environmental groups dropped their appeals of 20 permits issued to Sunoco Pipeline LP's Mariner East 2 liquids pipeline project after reaching a settlement with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.The agency in a July 27 statement touted the agreement with the Clean Air Council, Mountain Watershed Association and Delaware Riverkeeper Network as a "significant validation" of the permits, which were not changed.
Court vacates Forest Service, BLM decisions for Mountain Valley gas pipeline
In another setback for the Mountain Valley gas pipeline project, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit on July 27 vacated U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management decisions that allowed the pipeline to cross through national forest land. The decision raises the prospect of further delays for the roughly 301-mile, 2 Bcf/d natural gas pipeline, which would provide an outlet for West Virginia production to downstream markets in Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Co. LLC's Zone 5 near the Virginia-North Carolina border.
US EPA aims to finalize Clean Power Plan replacement rule by early 2019
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is planning to issue a proposed replacement rule for the Clean Power Plan by early fall and finalize the rule by early 2019, the agency told a federal court. The EPA disclosed its plans in a July 26 status report to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in the case State of West Virginia v. EPA (No. 15-1363), in which the court allowed the Clean Power Plan to remain on hold.
US agencies propose new rules on endangered species, interagency consults
The U.S. Interior and Commerce departments proposed new rules streamlining their environmental review processes and regulations for listing endangered and threatened species, designating critical habitat and consulting with other agencies on related decisions. Interior's Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service, or NMFS, of Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration proposed three new rules, two of which they proposed jointly.
Pa. environmental agency orders oil, gas companies to plug 1,058 abandoned wells
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection issued an order requiring Alliance Petroleum Corp., XTO Energy Inc. and CNX Gas Co. LLC to plug 1,058 abandoned oil and gas wells across the state.
