Report: Amazon Japan demands payments from suppliers to cover rising costs

The Japanese arm of Amazon.com Inc. is demanding fixed payments from suppliers amid rising shipping costs, the Nikkei Asian Review reported Feb. 28, citing sources familiar with the situation.

Amazon set a flat rate of 2% for producers of food and daily essentials, while rates for other vendors range between 1% and 5%, the report added.

The report said Amazon started asking suppliers to help cover the cost of upgrading its sales system and other expenses in late November 2017. The company is reportedly using a similar system in the U.S.

An Amazon representative refused to respond to the questions about individual contracts, according to the report.
