General Motors Co. CEO Mary Barra met with United Auto Workers officials in an attempt to put an end to the nearly monthlong strike that has already cost the automaker more than $1 billion, Reuters reported Oct. 10, citing a union spokesperson.
Barra sat with UAW President Gary Jones and Senior Union Negotiator Terry Dittes on Oct. 9 to discuss GM's most recent proposal, which has not yet received a response from the labor group.
"There was no secret meeting. There was a meeting (between Barra and Jones and Dittes) and we continue to meet at all levels," UAW spokesperson Brian Rothenberg reportedly said.
Reuters said GM declined to comment on the meeting but said progress was being made.
The strike began Sept. 16 after both parties failed to reach a new contract deal.
UAW had previously rejected offers from GM but said it will continue to negotiate with the carmaker.
