Nuclear update: Total availability rises as 2 units increase output

Total U.S. nuclear plant availability took a step above the 94% mark early Dec. 1 to 94.69%, up from 93.70% on Nov. 30 and much higher than the 92.12% reported on the same day a year ago.

Lifting total production was higher output at two reactors. Vistra Energy Corp.'s Comanche Peak 2 reactor in Texas was at 48% early Dec. 1, up from 2% on Nov. 30. The plant was recently restarted after being manually tripped on Nov. 25 "due to a loss of main feedwater." The Donald C. Cook 1 plant in Michigan, which is owned by American Electric Power Co. Inc., saw output rise from 48% on Nov. 30 to 85% early Dec. 1.

As of early Dec. 1, three units still remain offline, including Ameren Corp.'s Callaway plant in Missouri, Entergy Corp.'s Grand Gulf 1 in Mississippi and Tennessee Valley Authority's Watts Bar 2 in Tennessee.
