Apple Inc.'s China Clean Energy Fund will invest in three wind farms in Chinese provinces Hunan and Hubei.
The move is part of an initiative by Apple and 10 of its suppliers to invest nearly US$300 million by 2022 to develop projects totaling 1 GW of renewable energy. The wind farms in Hunan and Hubei will generate approximately one-tenth of the anticipated overall project total.
The Concord Jing Tang and Concord Shen Zhang Tang wind farms in Hunan are said to generate 48 MW of clean energy each. Along with a 38-MW farm in bordering Hubei province, the three wind farms supply a combined 134 MW to China's national power grid.
Early this year, Apple said the number of its suppliers who pledged to run their Apple-specific production on 100% renewable energy increased to 44. As manufacturing makes up 74% of Apple's carbon footprint, the company initiated the Supplier Clean Energy Program to decrease emissions.
