J.C. Penney taps former Shopko exec to improve in-store, online operations

Department store operator J. C. Penney Co. Inc. has appointed James DePaul, a former ShopKo Stores Inc. executive, as executive vice president of stores, effective Aug. 5.

DePaul will be responsible for improving the troubled retailer's in-store and omnichannel operations, according to a July 30 release.

Depaul will oversee the company's stores, store operations, store environment and design, as well as the asset protection teams. He will report to the J.C. Penney CEO Jill Soltau.

The new executive vice president will replace Mike Robbins, who is stepping down Aug. 3.

DePaul previously was chief administrative officer and senior vice president of ShopKo's stores and operations.

The appointment came after J.C. Penney denied reports that it has hired advisers for an in-court restructuring or bankruptcy.
