Hawaii braces for volcanic instability, more evacuation

The Hawaii National Guard is prepared to evacuate some 2,000 people by ground or by helicopter if needed from Hawaii's Big Island as scientists warning a steam-driven volcanic eruption could occur without warning, USA Today reported.

President Donald Trump has declared a major disaster in Hawaii's Big Island following the Kilauea volcano's eruption last week. The declaration allows federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts.

Ormat Technologies Inc. is assessing the impact of the volcano eruption on the company's Puna Geothermal Venture I project on the Big Island. Ormat CEO Isaac Angel said during a May 8 earnings call that the company has taken the power plant offline and is still monitoring the condition of the facilities.
