Construction of nickel sulfate plant begins at Lonmin's base metals refinery

Thakadu Battery Materials started building its nickel sulfate purification plant at Lonmin PLC's base metals refinery in the North West province of South Africa, Mining Weekly reported Sept. 5.

The 250 million South African rand plant is projected to produce 25,000 tonnes per year of high-purity, battery-grade nickel sulfate.

According to the report, cold commissioning is scheduled to begin in April 2019 and commercial production is planned for the end of the first half of 2019.

Lonmin CEO Ben Magara said, "[T]his nickel purification plant is a flagship black industrialist project and we are proud to partner with Thakadu — such initiatives are key for beneficiation in South Africa and market extension for Lonmin's byproduct streams."
