Seven & i Holdings Co. Ltd. reported Sept. 17 that Seven-Eleven Japan sales in August grew 2.4% year over year.
Same-store sales improved 0.1% from the year-ago period. Customer numbers decreased by 2.8% as average spending per customer rose 3%. Store count increased to 21,017 from 20,990 in July.
The Japanese food retailer also said net sales growth of its overseas unit, 7-Eleven Inc., fell 2.3% during August. Merchandise sales were up by 2.1%, but gasoline sales dropped 6.4%. For existing stores in the U.S., merchandise sales grew by 2.2%.
The Japanese company's general merchandising arm, Ito-Yokado, saw a 1.2% drop in total sales during the month. For its existing stores, merchandise sales fell 2% year over year as customer numbers fell 2.7%, and average customer spend grew 0.8%.
Supermarket chain York-Benimaru's total sales remained flat, with a same-store sales decline of 1.5%. There was a 1.6% drop in customer numbers and a 0.1% improvement in average customer spend.
Seven & i department store chain Sogo & Seibu's total sales and same-store sales both grew 2.8% year over year.
Seven & i Food Systems Co. Ltd., which operates restaurant chain Denny's in Japan, saw its total sales improve 1.1% from the year-ago period as same-store sales grew 2.7%. Its number of customers remained flat but average spending per customer grew 2.7% during the month.
