Apple working on MicroLED screens; Facebook blocks accounts over data handling

Top News

* Apple Inc. is working on its own next-generation MicroLED screens at a "secret" manufacturing facility near its California headquarters, Bloomberg News reports, citing sources with knowledge of the matter. The tech giant reportedly plans to use the new screens for its Apple Watch first.

* Facebook Inc. suspended the accounts of British company Strategic Communication Laboratories and its political data analytics firm Cambridge Analytica LLC, as well as Christopher Wylie of Eunoia Technologies, for violating the platform's policies over handling of personal data, according to a news release. The move came after the social networking giant learned that not all user data illegitimately passed on by University of Cambridge Professor Aleksandr Kogan to SCL/Cambridge Analytica had been destroyed after the violation was discovered in 2015.

* Qualcomm Inc.'s shares fell as the U.S. government stepped in to stop Broadcom Ltd.'s attempt at a hostile takeover of the company. Meanwhile, news of radio giant iHeartMedia Inc.'s long-awaited bankruptcy filing rippled through the music sector.

* Scott Norville, 21st Century Fox Inc.'s vice president of digital audience development, said in an interview that while monetization and infrastructure issues remain, traditional media companies are taking the range of possibilities on social media seriously.

* Twitter Inc. is set to ban a range of cryptocurrency ads on the micro-blogging service, Sky News reports. The move comes after Google Inc. and Facebook banned such ads over concerns about illegal activities.

Technology

* Verizon Communications Inc. unveiled TechSure, a smart home security service for its Fios and other high speed internet customers, Multichannel News reports. TechSure is available in $10, $15 and $30 tiers for customers.

* Chipmaker Qualcomm said its board decided not to re-nominate former executive chairman Paul Jacob as a director, following the news of his intent to attempt a buyout of the company. The news comes days after Singapore-based chipmaker Broadcom dropped its hostile takeover bid for Qualcomm when U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order to block the deal on national security concerns.

* Netflix Inc. picked up original documentary series "Bobby Kennedy For President." The series directed by Dawn Porter will premiere on the streaming service April 27, according to a news release.

Film & TV

* Drama series "The Sinner" will return for a second season on Comcast Corp.'s USA (US), according to a report by Multichannel News. The eight-episode season, from Universal Cable Productions, will star Bill Pullman as Detective Harry Ambrose, who will investigate the case of an 11-year-old boy who kills his parents with no apparent motive.

* Walt Disney Co.'s "Black Panther" continued to dominate the domestic box office with $27 million for the March 18 weekend, followed by Warner Bros.' "Tomb Raider" at No. 2 with $23.5 million and Roadside Attractions' "I Can Only Imagine" at the third spot with $17.1 million, according to comScore Inc. Disney's "A Wrinkle In Time" was No. 4 with $16.6 million, while 20th Century Fox's "Love, Simon" took the fifth spot with $11.5 million.

The day ahead

Early morning futures indicators pointed to a lower opening for the U.S. market.

In Asia, the Hang Seng was up 0.04% to 31,513.76. The Nikkei 225 slid 0.90% to 21,480.90.

In Europe as of midday, the FTSE 100 declined 1.31% to 7,070.26, and the Euronext 100 lost 0.67% to 1,022.56.
