Southwest Airlines to slash 40% of flights through early June amid pandemic

Southwest Airlines Co. said it will cut more than 40% of its flights from May 3 through June 5, citing lower passenger demand, operational disruptions, and the ongoing suspension of international services due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The scheduling change will reduce Southwest's operations by 1,500 flights per day to 2,000.

The airline said it will maintain passenger service to every city it serves, move cargo around the U.S., and facilitate essential travel for customers during this time.

"The overall demand for travel remains fluid during this ongoing pandemic and we continue to evaluate further reductions," Southwest said.
