A laden Suezmax tanker collided with a dry bulk carrier April 27 near China's Qingdao port, damaging its hull and resulting in an oil spill in the Yellow Sea, multiple sources told S&P Global Platts.

"A bulk carrier hit the A Symphony. Everybody is safe, but we are in the process of getting the facts," said a source directly handling the Suezmax. He declined to provide details on the cargo type and its receiving company in China.
"Oil has been spilled into the sea, hard to determine the amount, and it's difficult to predict how long it will [take to] be cleared," said a source at Qingdao port.
According to some sources in Qingdao, the ship was carrying 150,000 mt of bitumen blend, to be received by the trading company Runcheng.
Runcheng was not immediately available for comment.
Another source said the collision took place off Qingdao port and the hull has been damaged. A rescue team has been sent toward the ship by port authorities.
The anchorage where the collision happened is near Huang Dao where not many vessels are berthed at the moment, he added.
According to shipping industry sources, Qingdao port has already instructed other ships to stay at least 10 nautical miles away from A Symphony because of the oil spill.
The 2001-built, Liberia-flagged Suezmax A Symphony's recent port of call before moving to Qingdao was Malaysia's Linggi, according to S&P Global Platts vessel-tracking software cFlow. Such tankers typically carry crude, fuel oil or bitumen.
