There is irrefutable evidence climate change is making the
planet warmer. However, the impact on agricultural production of
grains and oilseeds is unclear. As the global climate has changed,
global agricultural production has evolved in response. Doubt
remains, however, on whether further advancements in agricultural
production can continue to offset the adverse impacts of forecasted
climate change. On the demand side, grains and vegetable oils are
increasingly sought to reduce carbon emissions of motor fuels. This
has shifted the demand curve outward, putting upward pressure on
prices along the way. The future is clear: agricultural innovation
will need to continue in order for the supply side to offset
climate change, allowing food production to meet the demands of
both the food and energy sectors.
