January-November bunker sales lag 4.5% on year
Low sulfur bunker sales reach 18-month high
High sulfur bunker sales slip 4.7% from October
Singapore November bunker fuel sales climbed 2.9% month on month and 3.6% above the previous year to record a 22-month high of 4.373 million mt, preliminary data from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore showed Dec. 13.
Marine fuel sales at the world's largest bunkering hub rose for the second consecutive month and were last higher at 4.503 million mt in January 2021, according to the data.
However, bunker sales between January and November totaled 43.736 million mt, marking a 4.5% decline from the same period in 2021.
Sales of the International Maritime Organization-compliant bunker fuel touched an 18-month high of 2.752 million mt in November, up 6.4% on the month and 3.2% higher on the year. Low sulfur fuel oil sales were last recorded higher at 2.776 million mt in May 2021, MPA data also showed.
November low sulfur bunker sales accounted for 62.9% of the total sales, the highest proportion in six months and boosted also by the largest monthly increase since July. This was 2.1 percentage points above October but 0.2 percentage point below the previous year.
Sales of the high sulfur grades, including 380 CST, 500 CST and 180 CST bunker fuel, reversed gains in October to record 1.249 million mt in November, 4.7% lower month on month but 4.8% above the previous year, according to data by MPA.
High sulfur fuel oil bunker sales in October had surged to its highest since the IMO's 0.5%S marine fuel mandate became effective January 2020.
Thus, the proportion of HSFO bunker sales against the total inched 2.2 percentage points lower on the month but gained 0.4 percentage point year on year, to 28.6% in November.
Sales of low sulfur marine gasoil, which has a maximum sulfur content of 0.1%, edged 0.9% higher month on month and 1% above the previous year to 307,800 mt for whole of November.
The number of vessels that bunkered in Singapore across November fell 3.8% month on month to 3,299, which was also 2.7% higher year on year, according to MPA data.
Though vessel arrivals at the port of Singapore in November slipped 0.1% on the month to 9,442, the total was 32.4% above the previous year, MPA data showed.
