High-priced spot LNG trades recorded Jan 2021
Production issues at LNG terminals in SE Asia, Australia, US accrue
Panama Canal bottlenecks, Japan power prices peak along with JKM
Unforeseen cold snaps through December-January, coupled with a slew of production disruptions across different LNG export facilities and supply bottlenecks, resulted in gas shortages across North Asia, sending utilities in the region scrambling for prompt cargoes.
S&P Global Platts JKM, the benchmark price for spot-delivered LNG to Northeast Asia, rose to an all-time high of $32.50/MMBtu on Jan. 13, 2021, after plunging to a record low of $1.825/MMBtu on April 28, 2020.
