Barcelona — Demand from Spain's largest gas consumers grew 0.6% on the year in December, after three months of decline, leading to an overall 2% gain for the full year, data published Friday by gas grid operator Enagas showed.

Data compiled for the company's IGIG index showed that demand from the ten largest sectors reached 213.2 TWh in 2019, up from 209.1 TWh in 2018, led by the service and paper industries, among others.

The worst performing sectors were metals, down 2.5% amid competition from imports, and refining, down 1.7% year on year amid an increase in maintenance activity in the run-up to new shipping fuel regulations.

Both the sectors showed flat demand year on year in December, while demand from the service sector jumped 27.3% year on year.

Total Spanish gas demand rose 14% in 2019 to 398 TWh, according to Enagas, the highest annual total since 2010, led by an 80% increase in demand from the power generating sector to 111 TWh.
