Florida Power & Light's 885-MW Turkey Point-4 nuclear reactor in Florida to begin refueling outage Oct. 4

Washington — Florida Power & Light's 885-MW Turkey Point-4 nuclear reactor in Homestead, Florida is scheduled to begin its refueling and maintenance outage Oct. 4, according to a presentation prepared by FPL.

That presentation was provided to S&P Global Platts by Eva Brown Sept. 14, who is a senior project manager of Turkey Point plant in the division of operating reactor licensing within the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation at the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

US nuclear reactors typically reduce their output gradually before shutting for refueling. This so-called coastdown period varies in duration from several days to several weeks.

The average duration of refueling outages at US nuclear units in 2019 was 36.2 days, according to S&P Global Plats data.

Both Turkey Point-4 and the adjacent 885-MW Turkey Point-3 nuclear reactors were operating at full power early Sept. 14, according to NRC's daily reactor status reports.
